Middle-skill jobs in LA’s economy offer great potential for living-wage careers, and by studying diversity within these occupations, data can support alignment of workforce development programs to help create equitable access to those occupations.  This type of focused workforce development sets a foundation for employment to reflect the wide range of diversity in LA County while helping businesses in our region’s key industries develop the diverse workforces they seek.  California’s community colleges are focused on this opportunity because of their commitment to diversity, equity and strengthening career pathways, resulting in a diverse talent pool.
In this latest report from Center for a Competitive Workforce, data on racial and ethnic diversity in eleven in-demand occupations and related job opening forecasts are coupled with supply data from the Los Angeles County region’s community colleges to support a more informed approach to program development so that access to training for these careers is increasingly equitable across LA County.  When analyzed through this lens, data highlights opportunities to diversify workforce development and foster the industry-education partnerships that enable growth industries to reflect the diversity of our communities.
This report is especially useful in LA County’s current context because job loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic impacted communities of color disproportionately, and as the region focuses on an equitable recovery, data can reveal opportunities to assist these displaced workers in accessing living-wage, middle skill jobs via affordable and efficient community college programs.
Please join the report authors, Shannon Sedgwick, Director of LAEDC’s Institute for Applied Economics and Luke Meyer, Director of the Center for Labor Market Excellence at Mt SAC, to hear top-level analysis and gain insights on the report’s findings, as it pertains to the community college system in the LA County region.
This event is open to all.
