Los Angeles County is large and diverse—geographically, socially, and economically. It encompasses over 4,000 square miles and was home to over 9.8 million people in 2024. If Los Angeles County were a country, it would have the 20 largest economy globally, with a GDP of over $886 billion in 2024. L.A. County’s private and public sectors supplied over 4.5 million jobs in 2024, and the county has over 1.3 million small businesses, with the highest proportion of woman- and BIPOC-owned small businesses of any U.S. county (1).
This report presents a description of L.A. County’s economy through the lens of industry cluster employment. Industry clusters are concentrations of related industries in a particular region; the more concentrated an industry cluster is, the more competitive that industry cluster is relative to other regions in the country. (More information can be found in the Methodology section on page 35.)
We last updated our industry clusters analysis in early 2024 with data through 2022. That analysis provided useful insights into post-COVID-19 pandemic recovery (2). This comprehensive update to the previous report includes data through 2024, the latest year for which official U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics information is available.
Note: To enable like-for-like comparisons across clusters and organizations, LAEDC industry cluster analyses focus on private sector (non-governmental) employment only; governmental employment is excluded for cluster-level analyses.
