In Honor of International Women’s Day 2019, today we take the opportunity to celebrate women while recognizing their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political.
Here are some words of wisdom from L.A.’s top female execs on their rise and success:
“You can’t give up. Maybe it’s because I’m stubborn, maybe a little foolish, but I just plugged away, trying different things, until something worked. Become passionate not just about what you “do,” but about running a business as well.”
“I started my business by accident! I needed a place to store my 250 huge potted plants and furniture… so I suggested to a friend who was selling an empty home that he let me “decorate” the home with my things to show how to live in the space. The house sold in a few days for a half million over asking. It was a blessing. I had been a screenwriter for 18 years and I was tired of sitting alone in front of my computer all day.”
“I didn’t have experience in building a consumer goods company at all. I just had the passion, and it drove me to create something that I thought would make a difference without a lot of knowledge of the road blocks ahaead. Had I known everything I might have hesitated, so it was good in a way that I was naive and just jumped right in.”
“The first year, we were very scrappy. We went to where our customers were. At 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.–that’s when shifts change–we put on our scrubs, parked a coffee cart outside of a hospital, and passed out free cups of coffee.”
