Re:         Support for Assembly Joint Resolution (AJR) 11

Dear Assemblymember Burke:

On behalf of the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation and its SoCal Jobs Defense Council, a network of Southern California-based organizations and leaders from the business, labor, education, nonprofit, and public sectors dedicated to attracting and retaining aerospace and defense businesses and jobs in the region, please accept this letter in support of AJR 11.

At the outset, we would like to commend your leadership on Aerospace and Defense (A & D) issues and for championing this important resolution.  Quite simply, AJR 11 sends a clear message to our leaders in Washington, D.C. that California supports its bases while simultaneously reminding them of the disproportionate share of losses we have suffered from previous Base Realignment Closure (BRAC) rounds.

As you know, California is a top location nationwide for aerospace and defense employment.  We have dozens of military bases throughout the state that support tens of thousands of service members.  One of the bases near and dear to us at the LAEDC and in the SoCal Jobs Defense Council is the Los Angeles Air Force Base, which has been put on the “chopping block” several times over the past few BRAC rounds and continues to be discussed as a potential for future rounds as well.  We stand with you and several members of the Legislature, Governor’s Military Advisory Council, local elected officials, and the community in Los Angeles County and throughout the state to ensure the Los Angeles Air Force Base is fully protected from both a BRAC round as well as any other budget cuts that reduce operations at the base.

We want to thank you for your leadership on this issue and we also want to lend our support for AJR 11.  We look forward to working with you and your office on moving this bill forward and showing our strong support statewide for the military bases in California.
