Rajit Gadh's Living Lab in UCLA's Parking Lots

UCLA MAE Professor Rajit Gadh’s Living Lab is on full public display in UCLA’s parking lots, charging electric vehicles (EVs) and sending data back to UCLA’s Smart Grid Energy Research Center (SMERC), where Prof. Gadh is the director.

On Level 4 of Lot 9, a box hangs on a wall. A sticker on the box says “EVSmartPlugTM“ and two EVs are attached to the box via thick electric cables. This would appear to be a stand-alone EV charging station, but it’s much more, explains Gadh. The box is a smart communications and control device, part of the WINSmartEVTM Network and it is controlled by a mobile app, developed by SMERC.
