UCLA: Solar Thermal Energy Research

By March 27, 2013 No Comments

The UCLA Energy Innovation Lab is investigating solar thermal energy storage.  Two-tank molten salt is currently the preferred state-of-the-art thermal energy storage for solar thermal power plants.  However, the costs of these systems are prohibitive for large-scale penetration of solar thermal into the electrical power market place.  A UCLA-led team is working to develop a thermal energy storage system that will significantly reduce the cost and increase the volumetric and mass-based energy density.
